This video addresses one of the most common problems I see with backstroke- overextending your arms on your entry. This can do lots of shoulder damage when it is done repeatedly, and it is best to re-teach yourself to have your hands enter the water at about a shoulders width apart.

As you are getting a “feel” for the water again, before you can work on fast swimming, you need to focus on swimming efficiently.
Drills allow you to focus on certain aspects of your technique which require fine tuning so you can get the most out of your stroke when it comes time to perform.
